What is Icaridin?

Icaridin, also known as Picaridin or Saltidin, is a active ingredient synthesized from the natural compound piperine, first made in the 1980’s as an insect repellent. It has broad efficacy against various insects and is colorless and odorless. Icaridin is considered to be as effective as DEET for offering protection against mosquito and tick bites. The World Health Organization recommends it as a “safe and effective insect repellent for human use”.

How does it protect you?

To understand how Icaridin works, we first need to understand how mosquitoes track their preys. Every living, especially mammals, produce a natural carbon dioxygen emission from their pores. Mosquitoes can spot this emission and therefore track a prey. Icaridin act as camouflage for our skin as it blocks our dioxygen emission as well as a repulsive. This means that insects move away from skin or clothing treated with it and do not feed if they encounter skin or clothing that has been treated with Icaridin.

Efficacy on mosquitoes

Our products are the fruit of many years of hard work and clinical research. We made sure that our brand offer the best quality on the market and the efficacy against anopheles mosquitoes of our products was monitored over a time period of 10 hours. The anopheles mosquito is a common carrier of Malaria and Dengue Fever. This breed of mosquito is more prevalent in Central and South America, Africa and Asia.

Icaridin insect repellent - protection

Icaridin is proven to be more efficient…
A superior performance of Icaridin was found when comparing the average repellence over all concentrations, which was 10 percentage points above that of DEET and nearly 20 percentage points above that of IR3535®

And to last longer than usual insect repellent
The best protection was achieved with DEET and particularly with Icaridin. Even after 10 hours, the efficacy of the Icaridin- solution was still at a level of 98 %. During this time frame, no loss of efficacy was observed for Icaridin, in contrast especially to IR3535®

Efficacy on ticks

As well as mosquitoes, ticks are responsible for many viral infection such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis or rocky mountain spotted disease. This threat has been taken seriously by MOSQUITMED, and we have been working hard to integrate it in our products.
Another laboratory study determined the efficacy of repellents against the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum).

Our products are proven to be more efficient
While the IR3535® product provided 94% protection (6% of ticks not repelled), a value of 98% and 99% percent was found for the Icaridin formulations (only 2% and 1 %, respectively of ticks were not repelled). Hence the most effective formulation containing icaridin showed the same efficacy as the DEET-formulation, however at a concentration 13 percentage points lower (Fig. 3)

Another study is of particular interest in which Icaridin and DEET were compared at an identical concentration of 20 % (8).These were tested in their efficacy against the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). The persistence time of Icaridin was found to be 2.5 h, which was more than five times greater than the persistence time of DEET, which was less than 30 min (Fig. 4)

Why Icaridin as Insect Repellent?

  • The toxicology and safety profile of Icaridin is well characterized;
  • Icaridin based products have low acute toxicity by all routes and are not skin sensitizers;
  • Icaridin showed no neurological or developmental toxicity and there was no evidence of genotoxicity;
  • Based on favorable toxicology profile, low skin penetration, rapid excretion of the absorbed material along with high compatibility with skin;
  • Icaridin based repellents can be safely used by adults and children;
  • Icaridin is considered to be the repellent of first choice by various the Public Health Agencies around the world;
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the active ingredient Icaridin (Picaridin) as product of choice for protection against malaria, dengue and Zika Virus;
  • Icaridin can safely be used by couples planning to have a baby in the near future as well as by expecting mothers.

Insect repellents are essential for all outdoor activities. Our non aerosol sprays are easy to carry during any outdoor activities. Beside protection against mosquitoes our products are also effective against ticks that may carry Lyme disease. MOSQUITMED INSECT REPELLENTS don’t damage your clothes and outdoor garment.
